Why should I consider dental implants?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be familiar with the unpleasant consequences. For many, this includes an unattractive smile, embarrassment, and/or pain and difficulty eating or talking. Dental implants can replace missing teeth and act and look like natural teeth.

What are some of the benefits of tooth implants?

For many, dental implants are the safe, predictable solution to missing teeth. Many experience benefits such as:

  • Replacement teeth look and feel natural
  • Improved taste and appetite
  • Improved cosmetic appearance
  • Improved ability to chew without pain or discomfort
  • Improved quality of life and self-esteem

Are there limitations on who can get a tooth implant?

No, there are no limitations.  Anyone at any age can get a dental implant as long as there is enough bone available to support it.

How successful are dental implants?

Implants successfully integrate with the bone in about 97% of cases. However, in those rare occasions when the implant and bone do not successfully integrate, your doctor will remove the implant and place a new one in a slightly different position to better achieve integration.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

No, an effective local anesthetic is administered before and during the surgery. You will not have any discomfort during the placement of the implant(s). Medication is usually prescribed to minimize any discomfort you may feel after the surgery.

When can I return to work after implant surgery?

Patients are usually able to return to work the next day. The doctor will discuss all postoperative care with you before the procedure.

Does insurance cover the cost of dental implants?

Dental implant treatments may qualify for some insurance coverage.  However, they are generally limited to the coverage provided by a bridge or partial denture.

How do I care for my dental implant?

Tooth implants need to be brushed and flossed regularly, just like natural teeth. And it is important to see your dentist for check-ups at least twice a year.

What happens if I don’t get an implant?

If you choose not to get a dental implant, you will gradually lose the bone that previously supported your natural teeth. As this bone disappears, problems with nearby teeth will likely occur. Issues will also occur with the fit of dentures, partials, and bridges. Loss of bone may also affect the appearance of your face and your diet. It is much better to replace a missing tooth before these troublesome side effects occur.  By waiting, you risk the possibility of not being a candidate for teeth implants or having to undergo other procedures like bone grafting in order to have them placed.
