Tooth loss isn’t something that anyone is truly prepared for. Nevertheless, a staggering estimated 70% of adults over the age of 35 have already lost one or more of their permanent, second teeth and by the time we reach 50 years old, we may have lost as many as half of them. It seems that, despite the effort that many of us put into preserving our teeth, problems such as damage and decay and eventual tooth loss are an inevitability. Therefore, it pays to know what our options are regarding tooth replacement for when the time comes.

When you do lose one or more of your permanent teeth, you may start to notice it affecting your day to day activities very quickly. Depending on which tooth you have lost, you may find yourself struggling to pronounce certain letters or have trouble eating. It is important not to overlook the psychological impact of tooth loss too, with people who have a gap in their smile experiencing loss of confidence, low self-esteem and even developing anxiety about facing social or career situations whereby they will command or attract attention to themselves.

Fortunately, modern dentistry means that it is no longer necessary to live with the effects of tooth loss. Dental implants are widely renowned to be the most successful, resilient and life-like solution available to replace missing teeth. At Marine Park Periodontics and Implantology, we are delighted to be able to offer our patients the benefit of a comprehensive dental implant service that encompasses all types of implant, including All-On-4 and Teeth-in-a-Day solutions.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants have a completely unique design that most closely resembles that of natural teeth. This is because the key component of each implant is a titanium post that is inserted into the jaw bone and acts as an artificial anchor for the visible part of the solution. The jaw bone then heals around the post, securing it permanently into place. This standalone method of securing the implant to your jaw is arguably the most important part of the design as it ensures that no pressure is placed on surrounding teeth, eliminating the risk of damage to them which is a common issue in solutions such as dental bridges.

In conventional implants, these implant posts are inserted and left to integrate with the jaw bone in a process called osseointegration. Patients are fitted with temporary crowns to enable them to use their teeth normally until the process has completed. They will then be fitted with their custom-designed crowns which form the visible part of the solution. However, in Teeth-in-a-Day and All-On-4, the implant posts are inserted at angles that mean that it isn’t necessary to wait for osseointegration to occur. Instead, the implants can be loaded with your custom-designed crowns and you can benefit from the full use of your implants immediately after your procedure.
